How to check your ChatGPT visibility
By Maya Ellison, content lead · Updated 18 September 2026
In short
To check if ChatGPT mentions your business, run a MentionChecker check: it asks ChatGPT the questions people ask about what you do, as a stranger would, from your country, and keeps every answer. One chat with ChatGPT is one answer, and it depends on your account (Memory in ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026). Your first check is free.
How we checked
Where this page says what ChatGPT does, it cites OpenAI's help pages, read on 18 September 2026.

Every price and credit count on this page comes from the same list the checkout uses, and every pack is on the pricing page.
How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my business?
Run a MentionChecker check: enter your website, pick ChatGPT and a country, read the report. Your first check is free. MentionChecker is a pay-as-you-go AI visibility checker. It asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot the questions people ask about what you do, and tells you whether your brand is mentioned in the answers.
- Enter your website at mentionchecker.com. MentionChecker reads it and proposes about a dozen questions people ask about what you do, so a CRM gets the questions a startup asks about CRMs and a speaker brand gets questions about speakers. Approve them, edit them, add as many as you like, paste your own or import a list.
- Pick ChatGPT and any of the other AI engines you want in the same check, pick the country the questions should be asked from, and run it.
- Read the report. Every answer ChatGPT gave, word for word, with your name marked wherever it appears.

What does a ChatGPT visibility report show?
Four things about the questions the check asked: how often ChatGPT mentioned you, on which questions, who was mentioned instead of you and how they rank, and which websites the answers cited. Every number opens to the answer it came from.
Run the same check again later and the report shows what changed: which questions you gained, which you lost, and who moved. The report has a link you can send to anyone without a login, and it downloads as a PDF.

Where does ChatGPT get its answer?
From the pages ChatGPT reads. Ask ChatGPT for the best CRM for a startup and you get a short list, a line on each, and, when it has searched the web to answer, the pages it read listed under the answer as citations (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026). For that question they are two review sites, G2 and Capterra, a Reddit thread, a comparison article, and two of the brands' own websites.

On 18 September 2026 we asked ChatGPT four everyday questions and counted the citations under each answer: eight for a puzzle game, the App Store and Google Play among them, nine for a tree-planting charity, mostly the charities' own sites, and one each for two local services, a single directory both times, and every business it listed came from there.
The MentionChecker report keeps every citation under the answer it came with, so the pages to get onto are listed in your report.
What do I do with what I find?
If ChatGPT mentioned you, open the page it read beside your name and check that what it says about you is current. If it did not mention you, open the pages it read for the others, a comparison article, a review site, a forum thread, and see whether you are on them at all.
MentionChecker does not change what ChatGPT says and does not write anything for you.

How to get recommended by ChatGPT
Get onto the pages ChatGPT reads for the questions people ask about what you do, the ones your report lists as citations. Start there, then read your own website as a stranger would and check that it says plainly what you do, where, and for whom. OpenAI's help page says a website must let its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, in to be eligible for ChatGPT's search results, and that placement is not guaranteed (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026). Then run the same check again and the report shows what moved.
Why not just ask ChatGPT yourself?
Because one chat is one answer, and it is your answer, not a stranger's. ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI engine: you type a question, it answers in text, and when it has searched the web it lists the pages it read under the answer. What ChatGPT shows you depends on your own account: the questions you have asked before, where you are, and what it remembers about you, and the stranger who gets the other answer is the person deciding whether to choose you. OpenAI's own help pages say that with Memory on, ChatGPT can remember details from your chats and use them when it searches the web, and that it may use your IP address to estimate your country or city (Memory in ChatGPT and Searching the web with ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026). A temporary chat set to Unpersonalized gets one question closer to a stranger's answer, and it still answers from where you are, keeps nothing, and counts nobody.
| What differs | Asking ChatGPT yourself | A MentionChecker check |
|---|---|---|
| Whose answer you see | Yours, and it depends on your account | A stranger's, every time |
| Country | Where you happen to be | The country you choose |
| Questions | One at a time | All of them at once |
| Citations | On screen until you close the chat | Kept under every answer |
| Who else was mentioned | You write them down | Counted and ranked |
| A month later | Start again and compare by eye | The same check again, with what changed |
Every line on the right is one report, and your first check is free.
What does it cost to check ChatGPT?

What do people ask about checking ChatGPT?
Can I check if ChatGPT mentions my business for free?
Yes. Your first check is free and needs no card: 10 credits, which is 5 questions on ChatGPT and Gemini, asked once. After that, one question on one AI engine is one credit: a check of 25 questions on ChatGPT, for example, is 25 credits, and the smallest pack is 50 credits for $9. Credits last 12 months and nothing renews.
Does ChatGPT give everyone the same answer?
No. The answer ChatGPT gives depends on the account asking (Memory in ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026), so the answer you see when you ask yourself is not the answer a stranger sees, and the stranger is the person deciding whether to choose you. MentionChecker asks ChatGPT as a stranger would, with no history, from the country you serve, every question at once, and keeps every answer.
What are ChatGPT citations?
The links under an answer, shown when ChatGPT has searched the web to answer (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026). For a question about software they are review sites such as G2 and Capterra, Reddit threads, comparison articles and the brands' own websites. The MentionChecker report keeps every citation under the answer it came with, so you can see whether any of them is yours.
Does ChatGPT always search the web before answering?
No. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT may search the web on its own when a question would benefit from current information, and that you can turn search on yourself for a question (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026). Only an answer that searched carries citations under it. An answer given from what ChatGPT already knows has no links, and for that answer there is no page to go and get onto. The MentionChecker report shows which answers came with citations and which did not.
Why does ChatGPT give a different answer each time I ask?
Because it does not always search. OpenAI says ChatGPT may search the web for some questions and not others (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026), so one answer is one sample. That is why a check asks many questions, and why the same check run again a month later, with the report showing what changed, tells you more than any single answer.
Can I see my competitors' ChatGPT ranking?
Yes. MentionChecker counts and ranks every brand ChatGPT mentioned across the questions it asked, so the report shows who is ahead of you and on which questions. The list comes from the answers themselves. You do not have to type in a list of competitors, and you can take any name out of the numbers.
How to rank in ChatGPT?
In a ChatGPT answer, rank is the order the names come in. There is no list to submit to, and OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026). A MentionChecker report gives your average rank across every question that mentioned you, so your ChatGPT ranking is a number you can compare from one check to the next.
Is checking ChatGPT the same as ChatGPT SEO?
No. ChatGPT SEO, also called AI visibility or generative engine optimisation, is the work of getting your business into ChatGPT's answers. Checking is the measure of where you stand before and after that work. MentionChecker does the check: it tells you whether ChatGPT mentions you, who it mentions instead, and which pages it read.
Does the country matter when checking ChatGPT?
For some questions, yes. OpenAI says ChatGPT may use your IP address to estimate your location when it searches (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026), so anything local, anything priced, and anything where the well-known names differ by market gets a different list from a different country. MentionChecker asks from the country the people you serve are in, which is preselected from your web address, and if they are in two countries you check from both and each gets its own report.
How often should I check ChatGPT?
One check of ChatGPT tells you where you are today, and a second one tells you what has changed since. MentionChecker can run the same check daily, weekly or monthly from your balance, and each report shows what moved since the last one. Run one check first and decide from the result whether a monthly repeat is worth it.
Can I check the other AI engines at the same time as ChatGPT?
Yes. MentionChecker checks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, and you choose which to include in each check. A check asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity unless you change the pick, and every engine you add to it costs one more credit for each question.
