By Maya Ellison, content lead · Updated 19 September 2026

In short

An AI visibility score in MentionChecker is three numbers on every report: how often the AI engines mentioned you, your share of every mention, and your average place in the answers that ranked names. Every number is counted from answers you can open on the same report. Your first check is free.

What is an AI visibility score?

An AI visibility score in MentionChecker is three numbers at the top of every report: Mentioned, share of voice and average rank, each counted in its own section below. MentionChecker is a pay-as-you-go AI visibility checker. It asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot the questions people ask about what you do, and tells you whether your brand is mentioned in the answers. A mention is an answer with your brand in it, and a citation is a page an AI engine lists under its answer as its source.

A MentionChecker report for a speaker brand as it opens: the latest check of 14 questions on four AI engines from the United States, 51 answers, the headline AI mentions the brand in 45% of answers, It mentions Bose in 63% of the same 51 answers, and under it three numbers, Mentioned 45% of 51 answers, Share of voice 16% and 3rd of 10 names the answers gave, Average rank 2.5 over 10 listings, then the top of Who the answers mention with Bose at 63% and Sony at 49%
The three numbers as the report opens: 45% of 51 answers is 23 answers, 3rd of 10 names, and an average place of 2.5 over the 10 listings that ranked the brand.

How is Mentioned counted?

Mentioned is the share of the check's answers with your brand in them. An answer counts once however many times it mentions you, and a question an AI engine gave no answer to is not counted, which is why 14 questions on four AI engines are 51 answers in the screenshots: Google AI Overviews gave no answer for five of them.

Under Every question, each question shows how many of its answers mentioned you, so a question you were in every answer of and a question you were in none of both add up to the one number.

Every question on a MentionChecker report for a speaker brand: eleven of the check's 14 questions on screen, each with the four AI engine marks and how many of its answers mentioned the brand, 4 of 4 for What are good alternatives to Bose speakers, then 4 of 4, 3 of 3, 3 of 4, 3 of 4, 2 of 3, 1 of 4, 1 of 4, 1 of 4, 1 of 3, and 0 of 4 for Best gaming headsets with head-tracking technology, with Audeze listed beside that question as a name mentioned instead
Every question with its own count: the eleven rows on screen add up to 23 answers that mentioned the brand, the report's 23 of 51, so the three questions below the screen add none.

At zero the headline says AI never mentions your brand, in red, and under it the report shows the brand mentioned most often instead, with its share of the same answers.

A MentionChecker report for a brand the answers never mentioned, as it opens: the latest check of 14 questions on three AI engines from the Netherlands, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, 41 answers, the headline AI never mentions the brand, with never in red, It mentions Toast in 76% of the same 41 answers, and the three numbers, Mentioned 0% of 41 answers in red, Share of voice 0% of all mentions, Average rank a dash over never listed in order, then the top of Who the answers mention with Toast at 76%, Lightspeed at 61% and TouchBistro at 34%
Never mentioned: 0 of 41 answers, 0% of all mentions with no place under it, a dash for average rank, and the name mentioned instead in 76% of the same 41 answers.

On 18 September 2026 we asked six AI engines for cosy puzzle games with no ads from the United States: all six answered with a list, no name was on more than two of the six lists, and so the highest mention rate any name could have had on that question was 33%, two answers of six. A mention rate is read against the names the answers gave, and the standings under the three numbers, described on the AI rank tracker page, rank every name the answers mentioned by that same share.

How is share of voice counted?

Share of voice is your mentions as a share of every mention in the check, and under it the report gives your place: 3rd of 10 names the answers gave means the answers mentioned ten names in all and two of them were in more answers than yours. Two names with the same count share a place, and the place is shown only when you were mentioned at all.

It moves with everyone's count. Between two checks your share can fall while your own count rises, if a rival was added to more answers than you were.

Exclude on a name's row takes that name out of the total at once, with nothing asked again and nothing charged, and Restore is in Settings, under Excluded from your numbers.

How is average rank counted?

Average rank is your average place in the answers that listed names in order, shown once at least three answers ranked you, with the count of listings beside it, and a dash that says never listed in order below that. An answer that mentions you without ranking anything gives no place, so the average is over listings alone, and 1 is first.

A MentionChecker report for a data tool as it opens: a weekly repeat strip at the top with Pause, Change it and Turn it off, the latest check of 14 questions on three AI engines from the United States, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, 42 answers, the headline AI mentions the brand in 10% of answers, It mentions Power BI in 83% of the same 42 answers, and the three numbers, Mentioned 10% of 42 answers, Share of voice 1.9% and 9th of 10 names the answers gave, Average rank a dash over never listed in order, then the top of Who the answers mention with Power BI at 83% and Tableau at 76%
Average rank withheld: the brand is in 4 of 42 answers, 9th of the 10 names the answers gave, and fewer than three answers ranked it, so the report shows a dash instead of an average.

Open any question and an answer that ranked you carries a chip, mentions you, with the place it gave. On History the movement of the average is a plain difference against the check before, shown in red when the place got worse.

What changes the numbers on a MentionChecker report?

More questions, a different pick of AI engines, an excluded name and the answers themselves changing move the three numbers on a MentionChecker report, and a different country starts a separate report with its own three. The table says what each does to each number.

The answers change on their own. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT may search the web when a question would benefit from current information, and that its results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026). The same check a month later shows what moved, and History gives each number its movement against the check before, counted on the answers both checks cover, so a check that asked more questions than the one before never reads as every number falling at once.

The History view for a speaker brand: the repeat strip, then History, 5 checks, 29 Jul 26 to 9 Sep 26, 2 markets, a United States and United Kingdom filter with United States selected, four numbers with their movement against the check before, Mentioned 45% up 8 points and 23 of 51 answers, Share of voice 16% of every mention, Average rank 2.5 down 0.4 in red over 10 listings, Checks 3 from 29 Jul 26 to 9 Sep 26, the sentence Up 4 answers on the 51 answers both checks cover, and the top of the Over time chart
Each number with its movement: Mentioned up 8 points, which is 4 more of the 51 answers both checks cover, and the average place gone from 2.1 to 2.5, in red because a higher place is worse.

A repeat asks exactly the AI engines the check it repeats asked, with the same questions and country, so each check compares with the one before. The AI visibility tracking page shows the repeat and what History counts.

What is an AI visibility audit?

An AI visibility audit is one MentionChecker check read as a report: the three numbers, the standings of every name the answers mentioned, the websites the answers were built from, and every answer word for word, on one page.

  1. Run the check. Enter your website, approve or edit the questions MentionChecker proposes from it, pick the AI engines and the country, and run it. The guide to checking your ChatGPT visibility goes through the first one step by step.
  2. Read the report. The three numbers first, then the one name mentioned more often than you, then the answers you were not in, with the names mentioned instead of you listed beside each question and the citations under every answer.
  3. Send it on. Share copies a link that opens for anyone without a login, and Export saves the report as a PDF with a letterhead, or as Markdown or JSON, so whoever opens it reads the same page you did.

What does an AI visibility check cost?

An AI visibility check costs one credit for each question on each AI engine, asked once, and the three numbers come with every check at no extra cost.

Why not one score out of 100?

Because a score out of 100 is one number a tool computes from what it found, weighted the way that tool weights it, and without the formula a reader cannot count it back to the answers.

What differsOne score out of 100A MentionChecker check
What the number isOne figure from the tool's own formulaThree counts: answers, mentions and listings

What do people ask about a MentionChecker score?

What is a good mention rate?

No mention rate is good on its own, so a good one is higher than the names you want to beat in the standings. On 18 September 2026 six AI engines listed cosy puzzle games with no ads for one question from the United States, and no name was on more than two of the six lists, a mention rate of 33% at best. The one name mentioned more often than you is under the headline, with every name the answers mentioned ranked under that. Your first check is free.

What is an AI visibility index?

An AI visibility index is one number a tool computes from what it found, weighted the way that tool weights it, and without the formula a reader cannot count it back to the answers. MentionChecker gives three counts instead, Mentioned, share of voice and average rank, each counted from answers that are on the same report and open word for word. Your first check is free.

Why did my AI share of voice fall when my mention count rose?

Because share of voice is your mentions as a share of every mention in the check, all names together. If a rival was added to more answers than you were between two checks, the total grew faster than your count, so your share fell while Mentioned rose. MentionChecker shows both on every report, with your place among the names the answers gave under the share of voice.

What does never listed in order mean on a MentionChecker report?

Never listed in order means fewer than three answers in the check ranked you. Average rank is your average place in the answers that listed names in order, and MentionChecker shows it only once at least three of them ranked you, with the count of listings beside it. Below that the report shows a dash instead of an average. An answer that mentions you without ranking anything gives no place. A check with more questions gives the average more listings.

Is a lower average rank better?

Yes. Average rank is your average place in the answers that listed names in order, so 1 means every answer that ranked you put you first, and 2.5 means second or third more often than first. On History the movement is a plain difference against the check before, shown in red when the place got worse, so a rise from 2.1 to 2.5 reads as down 0.4. Run the same check again and History shows which way it moved.

Does excluding a name change my mention rate, share of voice or average rank?

Excluding a name moves share of voice alone, and the place under it. Exclude on a name's row takes that name out of your numbers at once: the latest check is recounted, its mentions leave the total, so your share rises and your place can move. Mentioned does not change, because it is a share of answers, and average rank does not, because it is over the answers that ranked you. Nothing is asked again and nothing is charged. Restore is in Settings, under Excluded from your numbers.

Can I send my MentionChecker score to someone else?

Yes. Every MentionChecker report has Share, which copies a link anyone opens without a login, and Export, which saves the report as a PDF, as Markdown or as JSON, with the three numbers, the standings and every question in each. A past check opens as the report it was on the day it ran, so the numbers from three months ago can be sent on as they were. The AI visibility report page describes the link and the exports.

How many questions does a check need?

Enough answers for a share to mean something, and MentionChecker proposes the questions from your website so you start with a list. A check of 25 questions on the four AI engines a check asks by default, for example, is up to 100 answers, so one answer is one point of the mention rate, and average rank is shown once three answers have ranked you. Your first check is free and asks 5 questions on ChatGPT and Gemini.

How do I improve my MentionChecker score?

Start with the answers you were not in. Every question on the report opens to each AI engine's answer word for word, the names mentioned instead of you are listed beside the question, and the AI citation checker page describes the websites the answers were built from. MentionChecker does not change what the AI engines say. Run the same check again and History shows what moved, one answer at a time.

How often should I check my MentionChecker score?

Run one check, then the same check a month later, and decide from what moved. A repeat runs the same check daily, weekly or monthly from your balance, and History gives each number its movement against the check before, counted on the answers both checks cover. The AI visibility tracking page describes the repeat. Your first check is free.

Does the country change my MentionChecker score?

Yes. A brand checked from two countries gets one report and one History series per country, and every number is counted over that country's answers. On 18 September 2026 ChatGPT listed eight cosy puzzle games from the United States and nine from the United Kingdom, and not one name was in both. MentionChecker asks from the country the people you serve are in, which is preselected from your web address, and the report's first line names it.

What does AI never mentions my brand mean?

AI never mentions your brand means no answer in the check mentioned you. The headline says never in red, Mentioned reads 0% of the check's answers, share of voice reads 0% of all mentions with no place under it, and average rank is a dash. Under the headline the report shows the brand mentioned most often instead, with its share of the same answers, and the standings rank everyone the answers mentioned. That list is where to start, and your first check is free.
