How to check Google AI Overviews visibility
By Maya Ellison, content lead · Updated 21 September 2026
In short
To check if Google AI Overviews mention your business, run a MentionChecker check: it searches Google for the questions people ask about what you do, as a stranger in your country, and keeps every overview. One search is one answer and depends on your account (Manage Personalized Recommendations in Search services, read on 21 September 2026). From $9, no subscription.
How do I check if Google AI Overviews mention my business?
Run a MentionChecker check: enter your website, pick Google AI Overviews and a country, read the report. Google AI Overviews are Google's AI engine inside Google Search: what Google's help page calls an AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper (Find information in faster & easier ways with AI Overviews in Google Search, read on 21 September 2026). Google AI Overviews are in the paid check, from $9 with no subscription. MentionChecker is a pay-as-you-go AI visibility checker. It asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot the questions people ask about what you do, and tells you whether your brand is mentioned in the answers.
- Enter your website at mentionchecker.com. The check reads it and proposes about a dozen questions people ask about what you do, so a CRM gets the questions a startup asks about CRMs and a speaker brand gets questions about speakers. Approve them, or change them and add your own: the same set asked every time is what makes the next check comparable.
- Pick Google AI Overviews and any of the other AI engines you want in the same check, pick the country the questions should be asked from, and run it.
- Read the Google AI Overviews visibility report: every AI Overview Google showed, word for word, with your name marked wherever it appears, and the questions that came back with none.

What does a Google AI Overviews tracking report show?
Four things about the questions the check asked: how often Google AI Overviews mentioned you, on which questions, who was mentioned instead of you and how they rank in Google AI Overviews, and which websites the answers cited. Every number opens to the answer it came from. The three numbers at the top of the report are the share of answers that mentioned you, your share of voice among every mention of every name, and your average rank across the answers that listed names in order. A mention is your brand's name in the words of an answer, and a citation is a link in or under the overview to a page it was built from.
Run the same check again later to track your brand in Google AI Overviews: AI visibility tracking shows which questions you gained, which you lost, and who moved, and every report has a link you can send to anyone without a login.

Where do Google AI Overviews get their answers and citations from?
From Google Search, for the searches that get one. Google's help page says an AI Overview appears in the results when its systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful (Find information in faster & easier ways with AI Overviews in Google Search, read on 21 September 2026). Google's page for site owners says an overview may be built from several related searches across subtopics, with a wider set of links than a classic web search shows, and that it is only shown when it adds to classic Search, so it often does not appear (AI features and your website, read on 21 September 2026). Search Google for the best accounting software for freelancers and, when an overview appears, you get a short list, a line on each, and the pages it was built from linked in and under it. For that question they are NerdWallet, TechRadar and CNET, a YouTube video, a Reddit thread, and one of the tools' own websites.

On 18 September 2026 we asked Google four everyday questions and counted the links in each AI Overview: four for one of two local services, a directory, an insurer and two businesses' own websites, six for a puzzle game, the App Store and two YouTube videos among them, nine for a tree-planting charity, a US Forest Service page, a Facebook post, one YouTube video, a GoFundMe page and the charities' own sites for the other five, and no AI Overview at all for the second local service.
The MentionChecker report keeps the Google AI Overviews citations under the answer they came with, so the pages to get onto are listed in your report.

How to improve Google AI Overviews visibility from the tracking report
Start from the sources list in your AI Overviews tracking report: the pages the overviews that mentioned someone else were built from are the ones to get onto, so open them, a comparison from a finance site, a review, a YouTube video, a Reddit thread, and see whether you are on them at all. If an overview mentioned you, open the page linked beside your name and check that what it says about you is current. A question that came back with no overview is marked on the report as served no AI answer, so you know which questions have an overview to be in. If what you do is local, a directory listing and your own website are where to start: that is what the one local overview above was built from.
The check does not change what Google AI Overviews say and does not write anything for you.

How to get recommended by Google AI Overviews
Get onto the pages Google builds its overviews from for the questions people ask about what you do, the ones your report lists as citations. Start there, then read your own website as a stranger would and check that it says plainly what you do, where, and for whom. Google's page for site owners says there are no requirements for AI Overviews beyond those for Google Search: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, crawling must be allowed in robots.txt, the important content should be there as text, Business Profile and Merchant Center details should be up to date, and being shown is not guaranteed (AI features and your website, read on 21 September 2026). The same page says the control over what Search shows from your pages is robots.txt for Googlebot and the snippet settings, and Google's crawler page says the Google-Extended token does not affect a site's inclusion or ranking in Google Search (AI features and your website and Google's common crawlers, read on 21 September 2026). Then run the same Google AI Overviews visibility check again and the report shows whether you are recommended by Google AI Overviews now and what moved.
Searching Google yourself vs tracking AI Overviews with a check
One search is one answer, and it is your answer, not a stranger's. What Google shows you depends on your own account and on where you are, and the stranger who gets the other results page is the person deciding whether to choose you. Google's own help pages say that with Personalized Recommendations on, its AI-powered features can give answers relevant to your interests or previous searches, and that with the setting off your results are still tailored to your current location and your recent searches (Manage Personalized Recommendations in Search services, read on 21 September 2026). Its location page says Google always estimates the general area you are searching from (Understand & manage your location when you search on Google, read on 21 September 2026). Turning personalisation off gets you closer to a stranger's results page. The table below lists what a single search still leaves out.
| What differs | Searching Google yourself | A MentionChecker check |
|---|---|---|
| Whose answer you see | Yours, and it depends on your account | A stranger's, every time |
| Country | Where you happen to be | The country you choose |
| Device | Whatever you searched on | Desktop, every time |
| Questions | One at a time | All of them at once |
| Whether an AI Overview appeared | Whatever showed that day | Recorded on every question |
| Citations | Links in the overview, on screen until you search again | Every Google AI Overviews citation kept under its answer |
| Who else was mentioned | You write them down | Counted and ranked |
| A month later | Start again and compare by eye | The same check again, with what changed |
Run the Google AI Overviews visibility check when the answer you need is the one a stranger sees on a Google results page: every line on the right is one report, one credit a question, and the smallest pack is $9.
What does it cost to track Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews tracking is priced by the question: one question on one AI engine, asked once, is one credit. Google AI Overviews are not in the free check, which asks ChatGPT and Gemini. Credits last 12 months and there is no subscription. MentionChecker is a pay as you go AI visibility tracker, and every pack is listed on the pricing page.
| What | Credits |
|---|---|
| 25 questions on Google AI Overviews, for example | 25 |
| The same 25 on the four engines a check asks by default | 100 |
| The smallest pack, $9 | 50 |
| Your first check, free, no card: 5 questions on ChatGPT and Gemini | 10 |
What do people ask about checking Google AI Overviews?
Can I check if Google AI Overviews mention my business for free?
The free MentionChecker check asks ChatGPT and Gemini. Google AI Overviews are in the paid check. One question on one AI engine is one credit: a check of 25 questions on Google AI Overviews, for example, is 25 credits, and the smallest pack is 50 credits for $9, enough for two checks of that size. Credits last 12 months and nothing renews.
Do Google AI Overviews give everyone the same answer?
No. Google's personalisation page says its AI-powered features can give answers relevant to your interests or previous searches (Manage Personalized Recommendations in Search services, read on 21 September 2026), so the overview you see when you search yourself is not the one a stranger sees, and the stranger is the person deciding whether to choose you. MentionChecker searches Google as a stranger would, with no history, from the country you serve, every question at once, and keeps every overview.
What are Google AI Overviews citations?
The links in and under an AI Overview to the pages it was built from. Google's help page calls them links to dig deeper (Find information in faster & easier ways with AI Overviews in Google Search, read on 21 September 2026). For a question about software they are comparisons and reviews from finance and technology sites, a YouTube video, a Reddit thread and the tools' own websites. The MentionChecker report keeps every one under the overview it came with, so you can see whether any of them is yours.
What does Google's AI Overview say about my business?
Whatever the overview said, word for word. A Google AI Overviews visibility check keeps every overview under the question that produced it, with your name marked where it appears and the pages it was built from beneath it, so you read how Google's overview describes what you do one question at a time: whether it recommended you, listed you among others, or got something wrong. No score is put on the wording. The same MentionChecker check run again shows whether the wording changed.
Does every Google search show an AI Overview?
No. Google's page for site owners says an AI Overview is only shown when it adds to classic Search, and that overviews often do not trigger (AI features and your website, read on 21 September 2026). On 18 September 2026 Google showed one for three of four everyday questions. A question with no overview has nothing to be in. MentionChecker records it on the report as served no AI answer, charged like an answer because that is the finding, so you know which questions have an overview.
Does Google Search Console show AI Overviews?
As impressions. Search Console's Generative AI performance report counts how many times links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, date and device (Generative AI performance report (Search), read on 21 September 2026). It counts links to your pages, not your name in the overview, so it does not tell you which questions mentioned you or who was mentioned instead. A MentionChecker check answers that, one question at a time, and keeps every overview under its question.
Do Google AI Overviews reduce clicks to my website?
Google's page for site owners says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, and that sites appearing in AI Overviews are counted in the overall search traffic in Search Console, in the Web search type (AI features and your website, read on 21 September 2026). A traffic report does not show whether the overview mentioned you at all. A MentionChecker check shows that first, question by question, and who is there instead.
Can I see my competitors' Google AI Overviews ranking?
Yes. MentionChecker counts and ranks every brand Google AI Overviews mentioned across the questions it asked, so the report shows who is ahead of you and on which questions. The list comes from the answers themselves. You do not have to type in a list of competitors, and you can take any name out of the numbers.
How to rank in Google AI Overviews?
In an AI Overview, rank is the order the names come in. Google's page for site owners says there are no requirements for AI Overviews beyond those for Google Search, and that being shown is not guaranteed (AI features and your website, read on 21 September 2026). A MentionChecker report gives your average rank across every overview that mentioned you, so your Google AI Overviews ranking is a number you can compare from one check to the next.
Why don't Google AI Overviews mention my business when I rank on page one?
Because an overview is built from more than the results page under it. Google's page for site owners says an overview may be built from several related searches across subtopics and data sources, with a wider and more varied set of links than a classic web search (AI features and your website, read on 21 September 2026). A MentionChecker check shows which questions the overviews mentioned you on, which they mentioned someone else on, and the pages they were built from, which are the ones to get onto.
Do Google AI Overviews link to YouTube and Reddit?
On 18 September 2026, YouTube yes and Reddit no: two YouTube videos among the six links for a puzzle game, one among the nine for a tree-planting charity, and no Reddit threads in either or in a local service's four links. An overview for the best accounting software for freelancers does link one. In a MentionChecker report a video or a thread is a page like any other: the sources list ranks every website by how many overviews linked it, and each link stays under its overview.
What is Google AI Overviews SEO?
Google AI Overviews SEO, also called AI visibility or generative engine optimisation, is the work of getting your business into Google's AI Overviews. Google's page for site owners says the SEO best practices for Search are the ones that apply, with no special optimisation (AI features and your website, read on 21 September 2026). A Google AI Overviews visibility check measures where you stand before and after: whether the overviews mention you, who they mention instead, and which pages they were built from, in one MentionChecker report.
Do Google AI Overviews give different answers in different countries?
For some questions, yes. Google's location page says Google always estimates the general area you are searching from, using your device, the home or work address in your Google Account, your past activity or your IP address (Understand & manage your location when you search on Google, read on 21 September 2026). MentionChecker searches from the country the people you serve are in, preselected from your web address, and a second country is a second check.
Do Google AI Overviews differ on mobile and desktop?
They can. Search Console's Generative AI performance report groups the impressions your pages get in AI Overviews by device, desktop, tablet or mobile, as well as by page, country and date (Generative AI performance report (Search), read on 21 September 2026), so Google reports them separately. A MentionChecker check searches Google on desktop, from the country you choose, so every overview in the report is the desktop one for that question, and the next check is asked the same way.
How often should I check Google AI Overviews?
One Google AI Overviews visibility check tells you where you are today, and a second one tells you what has changed since. For AI Overviews tracking over time, MentionChecker runs the same check daily, weekly or monthly from your balance, each report shows what moved since the last one, and the repeat pauses if the balance is short. Run one check first and decide from the result whether a monthly repeat is worth it.
Which AI engines can I check besides Google AI Overviews?
ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, and you choose which to include in each MentionChecker check. A check asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity unless you change the pick, and every engine you add to it costs one more credit for each question.
Are Google AI Overviews the same as Google AI Mode?
No. AI Overviews are the box in Google Search results, AI Mode its conversation tab, Gemini the app at gemini.google.com. Google's page for site owners says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so their links vary (AI features and your website, read on 21 September 2026). MentionChecker checks the three as three AI engines, each answer kept on its own, and the conversation has its own guide, how to check Google AI Mode visibility.
The About page says what MentionChecker is. The same guide for the other AI engines: how to check ChatGPT visibility, how to check Gemini visibility, how to check Perplexity visibility, how to check Google AI Mode visibility and how to check Copilot visibility.
