What are GEO tools and AEO tools?

A GEO tool or an AEO tool measures whether AI engines mention your brand in their answers. Generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) are two names for the same work, getting your brand into those answers, so generative engine optimization tools and answer engine optimization tools measure the same answers. The page on what AI visibility is sets both terms side by side.

An AI engine is an assistant that answers a typed question in full sentences, such as ChatGPT or Gemini. A mention is your brand's name inside an AI engine's answer. A citation is a website the answer gives as its source.

The work is done on web pages, your own and the ones the answers cite, and the tool's part is to measure the answers before that work and after it.

GEO tools vs SEO tools: what is different

An SEO tool reports where your page ranks in a list of links, and a GEO tool reports whether the answer itself mentions your brand, which a page ranked first can still miss. An AI engine gives one written answer instead of ten links, so a brand is either in the answer or absent from it. A MentionChecker check measures that: each question asked on every AI engine you tick, and the share of answers that mention you.

How to choose between GEO tools: six criteria

Choose a GEO tool on six things: the AI engines its first paid step measures, a free baseline before the work, the cost of a second measurement after the work, what it costs to start, what the price pays for, and a published price for every tier.

CriterionWeightHow the points are given
AI engines measured on the first paid step25Six or more, 25. Four or five, 15. Three, 8. One or two, 3
A free baseline before the work20A free check of your own questions on every AI engine it lists, 20. A free check or tier on your own questions, with no end date, 15. A free check of questions it picks, or a form, 8. A trial that asks for no card, 5. Any other trial, 2. A trial that takes a card, or nothing free, 0
What measuring again after the work costs20Only the run itself, paid from credits, 20. Another month of the plan, 5
What it costs to start measuring: the first payment in the tool's own currency, one-off or the first month15Under 10, 15. 10 to 49, 12. 50 to 99, 9. 100 to 249, 6. 250 to 499, 3. 500 or more, 1
What the price pays for10A measuring tool on its own, 10. Part of a content, SEO or marketing suite, 4
A published price for every tier10Every tier on its page carries a price, 10. A tier priced only after a call, 0

AI engines carry the most weight because each one answers on its own, and a tool that leaves one out misses every answer that engine gives. The baseline and the second measurement come next, since GEO work is judged by the difference between the two.

What should GEO tools measure?

A GEO tool should measure four things on each AI engine: whether your brand is mentioned, which competitors are mentioned, which websites are cited, and which questions leave you out. A MentionChecker report opens on the three numbers any AEO tool should report. Mentioned is the share of answers with your brand in them, share of voice is your mentions as a share of all brand mentions, and average rank is your place in the answers that listed names in order.

GEO tool report: every question the check asked, the AI engines that answered it and how many answers mention the brand
Every question, and how many of its answers mention you.
AEO tools measure competitors: every brand the AI answers mentioned, with the checked brand marked as you
Every brand the answers mentioned, your own row marked.

You do not have to list your competitors first: the standings rank every brand the answers mentioned on the same three numbers, with your own row marked.

GEO tool citation report: the pages the AI answers cited, listed by URL with how many answers cited each
The cited pages, by URL, most-cited first.

Which questions should GEO tools track?

A GEO tool should track the questions people ask about what you do, because an answer to one of those is where your brand is mentioned or left out. A MentionChecker check takes the questions for your brand and asks each one on every AI engine you tick, so the report shows the share of answers that mention you question by question.

Add the questions you care about most, and every later check asks the same ones.

Is an AI content writer a GEO tool?

No. A content writer produces pages, and a GEO tool measures whether the AI engines' answers changed after those pages went up. Five of the fifteen other tools scored are sold inside a content, SEO or marketing suite, so their price pays for more than measuring: Writesonic and Promptwatch include content writing in their plans, HubSpot AEO sits in the HubSpot marketing suite, and Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush sit in SEO suites, each dated in its entry below.

A MentionChecker credit pays for measuring alone, so nothing in the price goes to writing.

How to measure GEO results before and after the work

Run a MentionChecker check before the work as the baseline, then the same check after it, and History shows which answers changed. Your first check is free, with no card: 5 questions on ChatGPT and Gemini. A repeat runs the same check on a schedule you set.

Measuring GEO work over time: answers that started or stopped mentioning the brand since the last run
What moved between two runs, answer by answer.

What changed on History lists each answer that gained or lost your brand since the last run, with its AI engine and question.

What to do after a GEO tool finds a gap

When a GEO tool finds a gap, the pages to work on are the most-cited ones in the report. A MentionChecker report ranks the websites and pages the answers cited, so the pages to improve, or to be mentioned on, are at the top of that list.

Which AI engines should a GEO tool measure?

A GEO tool should measure all six AI engines people ask: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, and MentionChecker measures all six on every pack, the first one included. On their cheapest paid tier, eight of the fifteen other tools measure three AI engines or fewer and four measure six or more, each dated and linked in its entry below.

GEO tools setup: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, ticked per check
The AI engines step: tick the ones each check asks.

You tick the AI engines for each check, and each question costs a credit per AI engine. For example, 25 questions on the four ticked by default use 100 credits, and the same questions on all six use 150.

How many GEO tools do ChatGPT and Perplexity mention?

On 13 September 2026, asked "best GEO tools 2026", ChatGPT mentioned ten tools in its answer and Perplexity mentioned seven, and the five AI engines that answered mentioned sixteen different tools between them, four of them in four or more of the answers. Microsoft Copilot returned no answer. A check asks your own questions and puts the same kind of count on your brand: each question, each AI engine that answered, and how many of those answers mention you.

How much do GEO tools cost?

A MentionChecker check is paid from credits bought once, from $9, and the fifteen other GEO tools scored start on a monthly fee, from 20 euros a month on Rankscale to 599 dollars a month on Gauge, each dated in its entry below. Credits last 12 months.

CreditsWhat that runs, for examplePrice
50 creditseight questions on all six AI engines, once$9
100 credits25 questions on four AI engines, once$17
250 credits25 questions on five AI engines, twice, with what moved between them$25
1,000 credits25 questions on four AI engines, ten times$45

Nothing is owed in the months between runs. Every pack is on the pricing page.

Why most GEO tools are not ranked here

Sixteen GEO and AEO tools are scored here, and the directory lists 257. A tool is scored when this site has a comparison page for it holding the whole plan list read off its own pricing page between 21 and 30 September 2026, and MentionChecker is scored on its own pricing page.

The other 241 are in the directory of AI visibility tools with what each one does, 55 of them with an entry price and the day it was read.

Which of the GEO tools to pick

Pick MentionChecker for a GEO or AEO project: a baseline and one measurement after the work, 25 questions on four AI engines each time, fit in the 250-credit pack at $25, and a repeat through a campaign is paid run by run from the same balance. The free check, 5 questions on ChatGPT and Gemini, shows where you stand before you buy.

MentionChecker is a pay-as-you-go AI visibility checker. It asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot the questions people ask about what you do, and tells you whether your brand is mentioned in the answers.

The guide to how to check ChatGPT visibility walks through one check end to end, and AI visibility tracking covers repeats in full.

Questions people ask about GEO tools and AEO tools

What are the best generative engine optimization tools?

MentionChecker is the best generative engine optimization tool for most brands, at 95 of 100 in MentionChecker's ranking of sixteen GEO and AEO tools, with Rankscale next at 62. It measures ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot from the first pack, keeps the first check free as a baseline, and charges a measurement after the work only for its questions, with no monthly fee.

What are the best AEO tools?

AEO tools and GEO tools measure the same answers, so the same six criteria score them, and MentionChecker leads at 95 of 100 because it is the only one of the sixteen where a second measurement costs only the credits for its questions, with no monthly fee. Each report keeps every answer word for word, marks your brand in it, ranks every other brand mentioned and lists the websites each answer cited.

What is the difference between GEO tools and AEO tools?

There is none in what they measure. Generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization are two names for getting your brand into the answers AI engines give, and a tool for either measures whether your brand is mentioned, who is mentioned instead and which websites are cited, and one check measures both.

Is there a free GEO tool?

Your first MentionChecker check is free, with no card and no end date: 5 questions of your own on ChatGPT and Gemini, with every answer, the brands mentioned and the websites cited. That free check is the baseline before GEO work starts. After it, packs start at $9, bought once. The list of the best free AI visibility tools scores what each tool gives free.

Do GEO tools track citations?

Yes, a GEO tool should, and MentionChecker does: each report keeps every answer with the websites it cited, ranks those websites and their pages by how many answers cited each, and lists each cited page with the AI engine and question that produced it. A repeat shows which cited pages changed since the last run.

Can a GEO tool track competitors?

Yes, and a MentionChecker report does it without you naming anyone first. It ranks every brand the AI engines mentioned beside yours on mentioned, share of voice and average rank, and each name opens the answers it was counted from. On a repeat, History shows which competitor gained or lost answers since the last run.

Can GEO tools show how AI describes my brand?

A MentionChecker report can. Each report keeps every answer word for word with your brand marked in it, beside the AI engine and the question that produced it, so you read how ChatGPT, Gemini and the other AI engines word what they say about you, and a repeat shows which answers changed.

What is the best GEO or AEO software?

MentionChecker is the best GEO software and AEO software for most brands, at 95 of 100 in MentionChecker's ranking of sixteen GEO and AEO tools. It runs in a browser with nothing to install, every report keeps each answer word for word with the brands and cited websites in it, and a repeat runs the same check daily, weekly or monthly, paid run by run from credits that last 12 months.

Do GEO tools need a subscription?

Most do, and all fifteen other tools in MentionChecker's ranking of GEO tools start on a monthly plan. MentionChecker sells credit packs paid for once, from $9, that last 12 months and never renew, so a month with no measurement costs nothing. The list of AI visibility tools without a subscription scores each tool on what it ties you to.

Does ChatGPT recommend GEO tools?

Yes. On 13 September 2026, asked "best GEO tools 2026", ChatGPT mentioned ten different tools in one answer. A MentionChecker check asks ChatGPT the questions people ask about what you do and shows whether its answer mentions your brand, which competitors it mentions and which websites it cites.

How often should I measure GEO work?

After each change you want judged, and on a schedule while the work goes on. A MentionChecker repeat runs the same check daily, weekly or monthly for one, three, six or twelve months, each run paid from your balance when it happens, so a weekly measurement during a campaign and a monthly one after it need no plan.

Can GEO tools track answers by country?

Yes. Each MentionChecker check is asked from the country you pick, preselected from your web address, and a brand whose people are in two countries is checked from both, with its own report for each. History has a market filter, so a change in one country is read apart from the others.
